Badass Bitches: Music to Pump You Up!

Sometimes we need a boost to keep us on the hustle, and these three songs have kept me on my game and I hope they help you, too!

Below are videos AND lyrics so you can imitate dance moves and sing with confidence like a boss!

I currently stream these songs while driving on the 101, dancing my ass off – hand motions in full effect – no matter who’s watching as they pass by.

What badass bitches do you enjoy dancing to? I’d love to know, please share in the comments below!

Truth Hurts – Lizzo

I actually used a quote from Lizzo’s Tiny Desk Concert for a contributor piece I recently submitted for Vie Magazine’s, The Goodness Issue. They asked each contributor to answer this question: If you could ask people to do one good deed, what would it be?

So, I said…

To love yourself first. We’ve heard it many times, but the concept didn’t hit home for me until I heard musical artist Lizzo on an NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert: “I just want everyone to remember if you can love me, you can love yourself. Every single day. If you can love my big black ass at this tiny, tiny little desk, you can love yourself.” And she’s right. Here’s an experiment I’ve paraphrased from international yoga teacher Annie Carpenter: close your eyes and think of a person you love unconditionally. Keep that feeling of love in your heart and imagine if that person were no longer here. That amazing love you have swirling around inside of you? Use that energy to move through life and kindness to others will follow suit. Or, just smile to a stranger. It’s one small gesture that can help others love themselves, too.” – Megan Waldrep, writer, Vie Magazine.

Truth Hurts by Lizzo

Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
WooI just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch
Even when I’m crying crazy
Yeah, I got boy problems, that’s the human in me
Bling bling, then I solve ’em, that’s the goddess in me
You coulda had a bad bitch, non-committal
Help you with your career just a little
You’re ‘posed to hold me down, but you’re holding me back
And that’s the sound of me not calling you back

Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay

You tried to break my heart?
Oh, that breaks my heart
That you thought you ever had it
No, you ain’t from the start
Hey, I’m glad you’re back with your bitch
I mean who would wanna hide this?
I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick
I put the sing in single
Ain’t worried ’bout a ring on my finger
So you can tell your friend, “shoot your shot” when you see ’em
It’s OK, he already in my DMs

Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi bom bi dum bum bay

I’ma hit you back in a minute
I don’t play tag, bitch, I been it
We don’t fuck with lies, we don’t do goodbyes
We just keep it pushing like aye yi yi
I’ma hit you back in a minute
I don’t play tag, bitch, I been it
We don’t fuck with lies, we don’t do goodbyes
We just keep it pushing like aye yi yi

Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi bom bi dum bum bay

Normani’s “Motivation” at the 2019 VMA’s

Earlier this month, while I was packing in North Carolina to move back to California, I turned on the TV for white noise to keep me company.

I flipped to MTV, and a rerun of the VMA’s had just started. Perfect.

With shirts, and pants, and duffle bags (these are the best) scattered around my bed, I paused, mid-fold, when a song came on that made it hard to pack because I couldn’t stop moving.

I looked up to see this girl dancing her heart out on stage, and when she finished, I was almost brought to tears. Normani dance moves? #goals You can imagine how spastic my car dancing becomes when I blast this one.

GO, GIRL!

Motivation by Normani

I’ma break you off, let me be your motivation
To stay and give it tonight
And, baby, turn around, let me give you innovation, hey
‘Cause I do it so right

You got that good good, baby, don’t you?
Got that good good, baby, don’t you?
But you leavin’ solo
Ain’t regular, that ain’t regular
I ain’t gon’ keep, keep fightin’ for it
Ain’t gon’ keep, keep fightin’ for it
‘Cause you know this thing here
Ain’t regular, that ain’t regular
Fallin’ into the bed
Why would we ever do somethin’ instead of
Fallin’ into the bed right now? Yeah

I’ma break you off, let me be your motivation
To stay and give it tonight
And, baby, turn around, let me give you innovation
Hey, ’cause I do it so right
Think about it, ooh, I think about it
Think about it, ooh, take a look at me now
Hey, a little motivation, alright

You got a bad one, baby, don’t you?
Got a bad one, baby, don’t you
And we both know there’s no
One better, boy, no one better, boy
Too late, won’t make it, I’ma tell ’em (Yeah)
Get you naked, but I won’t tell ’em (Woo)
‘Cause you know that there’s no
One better, boy, no one better, boy
Fallin’ into the bed
Why would we ever do somethin’ instead of
Fallin’ into the bed right now?
Eh, right now, now

I’ma break you off, let me be your motivation
To stay and give it tonight (And give it tonight)
And, baby, turn around, let me give you innovation Hey, ’cause I do it so right
Think about it, ooh, I think about it
Think about it, ooh, take a look at me now
Hey, a little motivation, alright
Hey, oh
A little motivation
Oh
I’ma break you off, let me be your motivation
To stay and give it tonight
And, baby, turn around, let me give you innovation
Hey, ’cause I do it so right
Think about it, ooh, I think about it
Think about it, ooh, take a look at me now (ooh)
Hey, a little motivation, alright
Oh
Oh

Mama Knows – Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds

Slowing it down a bit, this song hits right where it hurts so good. I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the South when I hear it. She reminds me of Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Rait. And to belt it out like singer Arleigh Kincheloe (who is, in fact, Sister Sparrow) is how we all sound in the shower, I’m sure, and how we hope to sound in real life.

A girl can dream, can’t she?

Mama Knows – Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds

Mama said good things come free
Do what you can and be what you need
We never had much but we figured it out
When you’ve got nothing, there’s nothing to bitch about

She would say oh, oh don’t hit me with your stuff
Say you got money, you got something
Oh, oh just hit me with your love
You ain’t got love, you ain’t got nothing

Oh, oh don’t hit me with your stuff
Say you got money, you got something
Oh, oh just hit me with your love
You ain’t got love, you ain’t got nothing

Mama knows
Mama knows

No shit your life is hard
It’s an easy Sunday when you know who you are
Ain’t no shortcut gonna bring you peace
But your mama knows just what you need

She would say oh, oh don’t hit me with your stuff
Say you got money, you got something
Oh, oh just hit me with your love
You ain’t got love, you ain’t got nothing

Oh, oh don’t hit me with your stuff
Say you got money, you got something
Oh, oh just hit me with your love
You ain’t got love, you ain’t got nothing

It’s so sweet
If you don’t know, you better go ask your mama

She would say oh, oh don’t hit me with your stuff
Say you got money, you got something
Oh, oh just hit me with your love
You ain’t got love, you ain’t got nothing
