You’ll learn that people travel long distances (the same area as the TV show, Deadliest Catch) in gnarly summer weather (milder than the show, but gnarly to you and I just the same) in big expensive boats with lots of expensive gear with big ‘ole expensive permits to legally fish each season. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can’t quite wrap your head around it when he explains his profession to you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then your head explodes when you learn his sister does it, too...🤯⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This sweet couple are two Northeastern lobster fishermen off the coast of Maine, and Emily @burntcoatsternman chronicles their daily fishing life on her Insta feed. 💘 I wanted to know how she deals with the POCF lifestyle, and thankfully Emily was game! Commercial Fishing in the offseason: On my 38th birthday, Chris dove down to the rocky shores of Bahia Santa Maria in Baja, Mexico, and fetched this lobster for me. (That might actually be illegal, so pretend we bought it.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We had just finished a two-day sail from Bahia Tortuga and were running low on water, tortillas, and eggs, our go-to meal. The next port was Cabo San Lucas, about 24 hours away. I remember feeling extra loved that day. Especially when he saved the majority of the water in the solar shower for me to wash my hair. Now that's what you call love on a 34-foot sailboat.😜⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Freelance writing and commercial fishing have a lot in common: you have a brief window (season or deadline) to get work done, you have to hustle to find your next buyer/job, and there's no definite paycheck bc you work for yourself.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I got into journalism for the writing. It's the craft I love most: sharing stories and the challenge of wordplay to make each piece come to life. Yet at the same time, putting yourself in at the mercy of many deadlines. The good with the bad.

Fishermen have a duality, too.

Though fishing is the riskiest job in crazy ass weather, it's the emotional part of the job, "the salt-water-in-the-veins" part, that keeps fishermen coming back for more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
