In the beginning, it’s the longing and learning to establish independence while in a relationship w a fisherman. 💞

Then, it’s concern for their safety, although worrying is prevalent at some level until we force ourselves out of the spiral with positive self-talk and trust in our fisherman’s ability.🙏🏽

Another stage is coping with fluctuating income. Fishing is so volatile (in weather and wealth) that one year, you’re making it rain (on vacations, house projects, and other goals), while others teach you how to make that seasonal money stretch.

Believe me; you are not alone at any stage. The best part is knowing that through the challenges, we are building strong relationships built on trust, reliability, and the ongoing spark that keeps the flame going – the silver lining to all of it!❤️

Who knows this feeling?! Rewatching this Reel hits hard after a week w my fisherman in Puerto Rico celebrating the end of California spiny lobster season.
What. A. Trip (en la Tierra de Madre)! 🇵🇷
Still reflecting w/ gratitude for the time together, and the beautiful adventure, both inside and out.💞🤩
Now, I’m realizing what a perfect distraction it’s been to the ticking clock of Bristol Bay, Alaska, this summer. The countdown to another fishing season. Sockeye salmon this time. Tis the life of a POCF…🕰️❤️🙏🏽

The house can feel a bit empty when your fisherman is gone. Some wear the superhero suits of solo parenting while other POCFs have a hard time wondering how to fill time without their buddy around. It’s a wide spectrum of emotions and responsibilities that POCFs understand and can relate to. 🫶

After almost 9 years of this unique life + learning suggestions from other POCFs, the general consensus is to “feel the feels” of the transition to get it out, anchor yourself, then step into the incredible independence we get to experience in commercial fishing relationships to make the season our own. ⚓️👯‍♀️⭐️

For helpful examples for living the solo life, for any stage you’re in, some Partners of Commercial Fishermen like to:

- plan trips w their kids and family friends around that time to give everyone something to look forward to instead of being sad that dad is gone.

- see live music to dance it out.

- solo date at that restaurant you’ve always wanted to try.

- continue w this favorite hobby or pick up a new one.

- get the house back how you want it. IYKYK 😜

Though emotions can vary from season to season, and new routines may take some time getting used to, when you get in your flow, it’s like no other.

What is your experience? It can be “a thing” to be around other fishermen, whether you’ve just started dating or you’ve been in the game for decades.
Fishermen trade tips, weather updates, fishery regulations, boat stuff, etc., and it’s as if they speak another language at times (because they do). Maybe you even speak it. Or maybe you’ve dipped your toes, and are becoming more acclimated. Maybe you have no idea what’s going on. I’ve been them all.

Over time, I learned that when we’d “just stop by the boat yard/harbor/trap yard for a minute,” sometimes the convos began to runneth over the precious time of togetherness on land before he’d fish again 💞 🚐.

Instead of getting annoyed, like I did for a bit, I started to listen to the fishermen’s concerns and camaraderie to better understand what they’re going through.
Other times…I’d leave, and that’s cool, too. 😜

Here’s how I’d prepare for the inevitable long chats to make time go by easier in case you find this helpful:

- bring a book to catch up on reading 📖
- journal 📓
- computer to work on deadlines 👩‍💻
- download movies and shows to 🤳📱, or 💻
- call friends and family (if there’s service) 🗣️
- snacks. Plenty of snacks. 🍇🥒🥨
