Invisible labor of Partners of Commercial Fishermen is the reason the commercial fishing industry can function, hands down. I’d love to hear an argument otherwise. Do you agree?

We are considered the backbone of the industry bc we’ve tended the home fires, fishing business, and raised kids solo since the commercial fishing began hundreds of years ago. Many of us don’t know what we’re getting into until it needs to be done.

Part of our job is handling “all the things” so fishermen can focus on staying safe and fishing hard. We’re called “partners” for a reason. It takes a team.💪🏽👯‍♀️⚓️

Did I ever think I’d get my hands dirty in the trap yard or become the bookkeeper? How abt the mama POCFs who raise kids during the season or those who advocate to keep fisheries running? I see you, we see you, and we celebrate all you do! Your value is incomparable. And if you haven’t heard it lately, you are appreciated 🫶

💍 3 years married yesterday & it feels like we’ve lived many lifetimes together since we met over 8 1/2 years ago. (Still can’t believe we once lived and traveled on a sailboat ⛵️from WA to Mexico. That time put our relationship to the test and we did it right out of the gates! Better to know sooner than later, right?)

As y’all know, Chris is my ultimate muse - there wouldn’t be a Partners of Commercial Fishermen community w/o him! So instead of gushing abt it here, there are many stories (the ups AND downs) about him and our relationship on the blog POCFPride.com under “I Heart.”

“I Heart” was my column in a paper in Santa Barbara, CA. A “sex and the city” vibe, documenting my curious dating life before Chris, the moment I met him up to our wedding day and more.

I am so grateful to have had the chance to immortalize our love story in print. As they say, if a writer falls in love with you, you can never die. Here’s to us now, and forever. 💞

(Who else?) My brain when Chris said to himself over coffee the other morning, “I’m going back to Alaska this summer to run another boat.” As much as I love time to myself, the thought of another goodbye makes my heart drop.

However, instead of feeling down abt letting this get to me after 8+ years together, I remember that not all seasons are the same and sometimes you feel the feels more than others. This is normal 🫶
Snapping back to enjoying time together is the real trick. Otherwise, we’ll catch ourselves in a cycle of longing instead of taking advantage of the joys and FREEDOM of the off-season. If you’re feeling this way, or have in the past, you are not alone! Sending you love as I work through it, too. 💞⚓️👯‍♀️

Great advice I recently read is to remind yourself that every season is different - the timing, situation, your mental headspace…meaning the things that were easier in the past may be hard this time, and that’s okay! A reminder to give ourselves grace and adjust when needed.

Here are some other helpful things to lean into when you’re feeling the weight of commercial fishing life:

😎 Chill for a sec. Slow down and ditch that big to-do list to give yourself time to recenter, recalibrate, and breathe. Instead of hoping for time to pass quickly, think abt enjoying these special moments to make this unique lifestyle your own!

🍵 Fill your cup. Pick 1 thing, even if it’s something small, that would just feel nice today and set aside time for that! Is it setting a 10 minute timer to lay down with no interruptions or phone? Coffee in a cute cafe? Calling your bff? Do that!

🤸 Movement. Stay active in your new flow by exercising or going on a quick stroll - both will do wonders for the psyche. Mark it as an event in your calendar to remind you to give it a try!

Realizing the perfect distraction of a trip to Puerto Rico to the ticking clock of sockeye salmon season in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The countdown to my fisherman leaving for another season. Tis the life of a POCF…🕰️❤️🙏🏽

When Chris and I first started dating, I had zero friends who knew what being with a commercial fisherman was like, and didn’t live near a port area with a fisherman’s wives’ community to connect with. I also felt that even as a girlfriend, I went through similar experiences and emotions during the on and off seasons as a wife. Where was a place that *supported* those who supported our fishermen?

In addition, I couldn’t find information about the emotional ride of being with someone in this unique profession. IYKYK.

So, I started writing about personal experiences, hoping to connect with others who felt the same way. Emails trickled in, and led me to interview other POCFs who shared similar joys and challenges of this unique lifestyle. Four years later, the blog has become a foundation for those who can relate to the nuances of being in a relationship with a fisherman - no matter age, time, or place on the globe. It’s quite incredible if you think about it!
