If you and your fisherman have ever thought about expanding your business, this is the episode for you. Listening to how Melissa Collier and her fisherman Joel have created @wcwildscallops, a direct-to-market biz on top of fishing and raising two kids is inspiring in a way that encourages others to try it, too.

Plus, hear ways they are responding to the Canadian gov’t to prevent closures in their fisheries, a real threat to fishing families on Vancouver Island BC, Canada (and we go deeper in the latest @nationalfisherman and on a private podcast for POCF forum members). Listen to the full episode on Apple, Spotify, and anywhere podcasts are available. (You can also click the link in bio to go straight to the show!)

It’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s fine. 😅😆. Can you relate?

Partners of Commercial Fishermen are the backbone of the industry bc we’ve tended the home fires since the industry began hundreds of years ago. For real tho.

Part of the job is handling “all the things” so fishermen can focus on staying safe and fishing hard. We’re called “partners” for a reason. It takes a team.💪🏽👯‍♀️⚓️

I pull this move a lot when Chris goes to Bristol Bay, Alaska, so we’ll see how spiny lobster season goes this season. Missing my man right now in California, but nesting in our home in North Carolina is really sweet. Can’t wait to spoil him when he returns!

Who else experiences this?

After years of connecting with partners from around the world, I’ve discovered a lot of suffering in our community – anxiety, isolation, depression, overwhelm, and relationship issues that also affect the fishermen.

However, we don’t have to suffer.

We can actually enjoy the adventurous life of being a Partner of a Commercial Fisherman. It starts with a supportive community.

For that, I created a *private forum* just for POCFs to connect worldwide w others who understand their life, can offer advice, vent, learn from one another, and have a good laugh. The best part is that it’s safe, secure, and the only place on the internet where this type of community exists. We’d love for you to join us! Link in bio to learn more abt our awesome forum!

This!!! I wish I could teleport any POCF that wanted to to meet in person. POCF Forum member @jeanenegwin has been w her fisherman for 37 years. He’s the last lobsterman out of Ocean City, MD, they have raised three boys together, and started a seafood biz a few years ago. She happened to be in town because one of them got married last week at this beach where Jeanene has frequented since she was a kid. What a joyful time!

We locked eyes in the coffee shop line, bear hugged, then fell into conversation like we were picking up where we left off.
But we’ve never met before. Or, at least, not in real life. Only the occasional comment and DM.
But that’s the thing when meeting or chatting w a fellow POCF, whether in person on or the private forum. It’s and instant bond and familiarity. No matter your background or personality type, we are connected through a unique and incredible lifestyle that only WE can understand.

If you don’t have community in your area, or looking to expand your friend and support circle to people who “get what it’s like,” our exclusive and secure forum is an online safe space *ONLY for POCFs* to connect and relate! It’s personally monitored by me, with contributions from POCFs worldwide from different fishery backgrounds yet speak the same language - the love of our fishermen. How cool is that?!

Inside, you’ll find:

⚓️ a directory of fellow POCFs 👯‍♀️
⚓️ a chance to dive into conversation or start a topic
⚓️ a space for questions and answers
⚓️ exclusive Virtual Zooms focused on joys and challenges and questions we’re facing today
⚓️ in-person invites only for forum members
⚓️ and more of what you want most - a corner of the world just for us to connect and support each other without judgment.

We know what it’s like to feel lonely at times, overwhelmed by running the business, decisions and transitions, or feeling misunderstood while our partners are at sea. So think of the forum as insurance for the on and off seasons to connect with others who “get it” and are here to lift your spirits. You are truly not alone!

Who wants money fund ideas to help your community? Sounds too good to be true, but it can happen! 💰⚓️
POCF Bri Dwyer explains the grant writing process and how you can apply to get grants and loans to help your personal fishing business and your community, too.

I love this episode because, although you may know Bri from the wildly popular show @deadliestcatch, this conversation shows how a partner of a commercial fisherman works hard to give back to the industry. (You can see on my face how shocked I was to learn how mucus she had to write 😮. But, as Bri points out, not all grants are the same and may have limitations that aren’t as lengthy.)
We also hear updates on family life and what Alaska means to Bri, which makes this episode extra sweet. 💓👯‍♀️⚓️

To check out films Bri and team made for the Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers from the grant money, visit their YouTube channel. To learn more about Bri and see her amazing photography, visit bridwyerimages.com or @bri.dwyer 👯‍♀️⚓️

If you want to connect further with others in our community, I’d love for you to join us in the private forum! The forum is a safe space for us to chat with POCFs all over the world to share our thoughts and feelings without judgment. If it feels aligned for you, click here to join the private forum!

It can feel super awkward to be around other fishermen, whether you’ve just started dating or you’ve been in the game for decades.
Fishermen trade tips, weather updates, fishery regulations, boat stuff, etc., and it’s like they speak another language at times (because they do). Instead of fighting it, like I did for years, I started to listen to their concerns and camaraderie.
Over time, when I knew we’d “just stop by the boat yard/harbor/trap yard for a a second,” I prepared for the inevitable long chats by bringing books, my journal, computer, and snacks to the to make time go by more easily.

I know it’s different for everyone, but I’d love to know, how do you feel when you’re among other fishermen?

Do you feel comfortable or is it cringey?

A little of both?
