We’ve talked a lot about sobriety in my stories the past few weeks and many questions came in re: getting over that initial hump.
That phase when all the feelings that you’ve been numbing rise to the surface, and what it takes to enter a new way of life that you long for; AKA less shame, guilt, no hangovers, etc. (Our discussions are saved under “Sobriety 💫” highlights if you’d like to join in.)
There are many ways to get through it like therapy, group support, smash room to let the rage out. And here are 3 DIY ways that you can accomplish that emotional release all on your own.
DIY SALT WATER THERAPY
💧CRY. Like, ugly cry. Sob, wail, snotty nose weeping, bawling, whatever you want to call it. Salty tears help release that energy to make room for your new self. (Pro tip: do it in the privacy of your own home or remote parts of nature instead of, like, the airport. But if you must, bust it out.)
💧 SWEAT. Exercise, dance, sauna, steam whatever makes you feel good to get nice and salty and release those toxins that are crowding up your beautiful body. Make sure to hydrate after with water, preferably w electrolytes.
💧 OCEAN or BODY OF WATER. The ocean is the answer for so many and, in my opinion, the colder the better. #winhoff Salt Water dips can support the immune system and benefit mental health by boosting production of beta-endorphins; that elusive, 100% natural “feel-good” high we all crave. It’s truly transformative, even just one quick dip!
Regardless of which you choose, trying just one new thing means you’re stepping into the person you are meant to be. You can do it. You are not alone. 💫

😂 Learning to share space again can be an adjustment, am I right? Emotional, yes, but the actual PHYSICAL adjustments of space can almost feel as if you’re being invaded. (Or is it just me?)
The irony is that I’ve been in California (my fisherman’s port) for less than 24 hours and have fully reorganized my fisherman’s space to feel more…Megan’s dream house?
Of course, Chris is way more forgiving when it comes to nesting the home compared to me (ie less controlling/doesn’t mind). Makes it much easier to have done the good work while he’s out fishing all day. 😁
After writing this caption, I’m realizing this would be a great topic to unpack in therapy (no pun intended). 🤔
Here are 3 ways that have helped couples in our community reconnect and get back in their flow:
1. Give yourself two days to fully adjust to living together again. If you can, take off work, do it. One POCF does two to three days of “Homecoming,” as she calls it, so she doesn’t feel “pushed out of my routine or stressed. We can relax, have slow mornings, and reconnect at a reasonable pace.”
2. If you don’t have the time, plan a date night or make them slow dance with you to a favorite song.
3. Once you’re a little settled, choose a show or movie to watch together. Cuddling ensues!

Hard to say when they need to put the boat away, stack gear, maybe some prep for the next season, tying more loose ends….post-work for a fishing season is a whole other season in itself. Just a constant state of wonder. ✨🤔😂
